When I started my company in 2005, I had no idea that the business I started in my spare bedroom would expand to become the one it is today. The American Dream is a tale as old as democracy. Owning and operating your own business, and ensuring it’s a successful one, is the definition of the pursuit of happiness for many people, myself included. If you share that dream, how can you successfully climb your way to the top and become a prosperous entrepreneur?
Listen To Your Heart And Calling
While it may sound cheesy, it’s the truth. For me, I knew at a very early point that I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I also knew that I wanted to do something incredible with my life. I wanted it to have lots of meaning. I wanted it to have lots of impact. Quite frankly, I wanted to do some of the really cool things that people in the world get to do.
That same entrepreneurial spirit has driven Advantage Media Group to be named to the prestigious Inc. 500/5000 list of America’s fastest growing private companies in four of the past five years. We’ve also been named to the Best Places to Work in South Carolina list in 2013 and 2014.
Apart from the business, I’ve been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Investor’s Business Daily, Young Money Magazine, and on ABC and Fox. I was also named to the 2011 Inc. Magazine 30 Under 30 list of “America’s coolest entrepreneurs”.
I’ve published seven books in the past 10 years, including Lead the Field, 21 Ways to Build Your Business With a Book, Book The Business, and co-authored The Book Itch.
I also love to travel, so I take that passion and use it to travel around the country speaking on my experience about how a book is still the best way to hyper grow your business.
Live Life To The Fullest
One of the main philosophies in my live is, “You only live life once, but if you work it right, once is enough.” That meaning, for me, is that life is not a dress rehearsal. We don’t have another shot. So, if you have dreams, if you have ambitions, if there are things you want to do, if there are people you want to meet, if there are places you want to go, this is the only chance you have.
If there’s something you want in your life, to heck with whatever anybody else thinks – go for it! The only person that prevents you from achieving what you want to accomplish is you, your own self-limiting beliefs, and your own fear.
These beliefs and mantras have helped guide my entrepreneurial spirit to running a business that continues to grow, day by day.
Be a Leader, Not a Boss
Finally, leadership and attitude are key components towards growing a business. You’ve got to be awfully resilient, and you’ve got to have an attitude where you can be face-to-face with speed bumps and cruise right over them. You have to stay focused on moving ahead and keep a positive attitude throughout it all. That is so important.
